Favorite babygift

A little baby sheet is still my favorite babygift. I made my first one when I was pregnant with our eldest. It was my first embroidery experience for ages. When friends got babies, much later, it was still the most precious gift.

Kobo to go

  • Mooi weer ( Als in "pff, warm he)

I'm a booklover. And vacation equals reading to me. As does sunny water and delicious lunches, by the way. But bringing 15 books, and ourselves and two tents is rather a lot for our car. So with some birthday money I bought an e-reader. At the local bookshop, because I want the bookshop to stay forever in my town. Amazon might be convenient, there's nothing better than getting lost in a real bookshop.

My Kobo sleeve had to be a little folksy. To give some competition to my digital surrender. It has my initials on the back. I bet you'll never guess what my second name is.

A stork for Smilte

A former collegue of my husband gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Smilte. A Lithuanian name, there's supposed to be a littled dot on the e. Her mother is always so very attentive, the least I could do was making a little gift for her baby girl. I made an embroidered sheet for her crib. The stork is apparently the national bird of Lithuania and is also a design with some history to us. I made a drawing of a stork for the birth announcement of Lauren

High tea and old friends

Tranen waren mijn bedankje. Dat is goed, toch?

The six of us used to be so close. Sorority friends. For over ten years we had our monday night diners and other occasions, but more than twenty years later it's difficult to get all of us together. This afternoon we had an high tea and although we weren't complete, we were with more than the usual suspects with our husbands and children and a new date in our agendas! Old friends, still special.

There even was a new mom among us (I was by far the first to have children). I made her an embroidered sheet with her name on it. Tears as thank you, that's a good thing, isn't it?

Open Hem Stitches/ Screenprinted tablecloth #2

A while ago I showed you the tablecloth I've screen printed. I wanted to make something really special of it and hemmed it with an old fashioned open hem stitch. An old encyclopedia was my teacher in this case. What would we be without google?

Happy Birthday

A homemade present has become a part of the birthday ritual for Lauren. Last year I made her a butterfly mosquito net, this year a sewing kit. The needlebook and matching pincushion I made of felt.  I couldn't find the time to sew the whole kit, as I originally intended,  but bought a box instead at a hideous store  for almost nothing. I changed the look a bit and added my 'vervlogen dagen' button.
The lady in my favourite fabric store used to say that "there are no people living at the back", when I excused myself for the messy back of a quilt top. In case of the needlebook and pincushion an embellished, people might also live at the back, hence the embellishments. I put also three Kaffe Fasset fat quarters in her kit, for the sake of matching colors.

And for now, let them eat cake! Happy Birthday, lieve Lauren.

Needlebook

Before she was born, I made a mobile for Lauren to hang above her crib. With an clearvoyant vision I made little felt horses and embellished them with felt flowers and embroidery, not knowing she would turn out to be a horseloving girl.

Years later I was planning on turning this mobile into a merry-go-round and I cut the horses loose from the mobile frame, but that merry-go-round stayed in the closet. Unfinished. That's how things go, sometimes. I ran into these little horses again while I was thinking about making (or even sewing) a sewingkit for Lauren's birthday in October. I made this needlebook.  I really love that folk art style. In the back of my mind I knew I was  copying an idea I've seen somewhere in blogland. Larissa from mmmcrafts made these beautiful needlebooks and a while ago they were available in her etsy shop. Please visit her lovely blog and admire her beautiful designs.

Duvet cover

Making presents is what I like most. This was a commission for friend. She's giving it to her brother and sister in law who are celebrating their 12,5 year anniversary. I've made them a duvet cover. Or actually, I bought the duvet cover at Hema and sew on their initials, and embroidered names and dates. These pictures are from the pillow covers. I hope they like it.

Sherazade quilt

Happy New Year to all of you! I made three New Year's resolutions. The picture above implicates the first two.  Finishing some projects and not being such a perfectionist. So I  show you a poor picture of a quilt that isn't finished by far. 1001 Nights I named it. I considered other names lately, Who's afraid of Arabism might be a good one, as my own little civilian protest. Or Sherazade to emphasis the importance of telling stories. I embroidered the hand of Fatima for no other reason than being in an embroidery mood. When I thought of what to do with it next, these bellydancers came up. I made them from little scraps and fixed them with vliesofix. I stitched a small line with chainstitches along the edges of the fabric. The white threads you see are just for 'sandwiching', getting the top, the back and the layer in between together. I'll remove them when I'm done quilting. And please remind me of showing you the finished quilt regularly!
My third resolution is to finally open my shop! This shop is an answer to all those people who said to me "You're so creative, you should do something with that". Making gifts is apparently not 'doing something with it'. I love making things, I love making beautiful gifts for other people, so a shop might be a good idea! Just a couple of days and Vervlogen Dagen de winkel, will be open!
