Hup Holland Hup

Aan mij zal het niet liggen. Ik ben geen groot voetbalfan, en dat is het understatement van de eeuw. Ik vind alleen avondvullend de kleur groen in een hoek van de kamer al bijzonder ongezellig, maar dat terzijde. Als iedereen dan opgetuigd -"Mam, mogen we oranje haar?"- voor de televisie zit, hoop ik toch ook wel dat 'ze' winnen. Sorry, 'we'.

En toen Valentijn met deze brullende origami leeuw thuiskwam, kon ik het niet laten ook even een versie te maken. De mijne ziet eruit zoals het Nederlands elftal voetbalt, totaal ongevaarlijk. Ook maken: peper en zoutvaatje vouwen (aanwijzingen van Valentijn: een kruisje en een plusje vouwen, puntjes naar binnen, omdraaien en nog eens puntjes naar binnen, zie ook hier. Plak boven en onder vast en vouw de onderste flapjes naar binnen.) en een paar manen, tanden en ogen knippen. Dat kan u, dat weet ik zeker.

En duimen, dat is het enige dat helpt. We moeten met twee punten verschil winnen, en "Germanica volente" gaan we dan door. Die moeten namelijk hun "sportieve plicht" vervullen. Ik hou niet van voetbal, maar niets leuker om je te verkneukelen om het commentaar!


Orange, which is short for the Dutch soccer team, is not doing too well at the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine. Tomorrow they have their last chance to stay in. Would origami help, you think? Fairly, I couldn't care less, but my boys do, so let's hope they beat Portugal.

Soapbox race

De zeepkistenrace was een succes! De jongens slaagden erin om tijdens het partijtje van Valentijn, twee zeepkisten te bouwen en al hun vingers te behouden. De enige pleister werd op de duim van de hoofd- mechanieker geplakt, ook bekend als 'papa'. Ze spraken over draadeindes, zadeltjes, borgmoeren en meer van dat jargon en en passant bespraken ze - natuurlijk- het eredivisie voetbal. Niets mannelijks was ze vreemd.

Ze schroefden, zaagden en timmerden en kwamen al doende tot inzicht. Als kind had ik een broertje dood aan feestjes met een educatieve ondertoon en als ouder heb ik dat nog steeds, maar ik kan me niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat ze vandaag wel wat geleerd hebben.

Maar het ging natuurlijk om het plezier én de race. Het weer dat de hele dag koud, guur en winderig was (drie liter tomatensoep tijdens de 'schaft' ging bijna schoon op, net als een enorme berg met broodjes knakworst) liet zich aan het einde van de dag nog even van een wat vriendelijker kant zien. En ik heb geen bouwvakkersdecolletés gezien, maar wel een keur aan de bontgekleurde shorts die uit immer afzakkende jeans staken.

The soapbox building and race we organised for Valentijn's eleventh birthday party was a big succes. The boys managed two build to soapboxes and kept all of their fingers. The only bandaid was for their dad. They used a lot of untranslatable builder's speak and discussed the dutch soccer in between.They had a lot of fun during the race. It was a cold and windy day, but they didn't care. They showed their shorts anyway...

Waldorf Angel

Vorig jaar vertelde ik al hoe de Vrije School tradities langzaam hun intrede doen in mijn volwassen-met-kinderen leven, nadat ik er mij een jeugd lang tegen heb verzet. Ik had nooit gedacht dat ik nog eens op zoek zou gaan naar een tutorial voor deze engeltjes van wol. En dat ik teleurgesteld zou zijn, omdat ik geen goede kon vinden. Dus raar maar waar; ik heb er zelf een gemaakt. Het is trouwens helemaal niet moeilijk en er zijn bovendien veel mooiere voorbeelden dan de mijne. Klik hier voor de beschrijving.

Last year I told you how Waldorf traditions slowly but surely found their way in my adult life after a childhood filled with pulling away from them. A few years ago I would never had thought I would search for a tutorial for these waldorf angels of wool and be dissappointed by not finding it. So I whipped it up myself. Another paper star

Het heerlijk avondje is weer voorbij. Voorbij, voorbij en o, voorgoed voorbij. Nou ja, tot volgend jaar, dan. Tijd om eens helemaal in de Christmas Craft Challenge te duiken. Nou ja met zes kerstdecoraties vind ik dat we het tot dusver al heel aardig gedaan hebben.

Ongeveer een maand geleden zag ik een jongetje op school met deze ster rondlopen. Ik kende hem niet goed, maar die origami-achtige ster lonkte dusdanig dat  ik hem vroeg hoe hij dat gemaakt had. Het is een beetje een wiskundige puzzel...Hallo, hallo, bent u daar nog? Je ziet het pas als je het doorhebt, om met Johan Cruijff te spreken, maar echt moeilijk is het niet. About a month ago I saw a boy at school running around with a star like this. I was not very familiar with the kid but I couldn't resist this origami looking ornament he was carrying around. So I asked him to explain to me how to make this. Frankly, I didn't understand it at first. It's like a math puzzle. Are you still with me....? Just try, it isn't that hard. It's modular origami. Felt advent garland

Nog 20 dagen te gaan voor het kerst is. Eigenlijk had ik deze aftelslinger voor 1 december bedacht, maar ja 'life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans'. Voor vandaag dan maar. Meervilt is een fijne (web)winkel met prachtig vilt, waar ik 25 vilten balletjes kocht. Van een tot vijfentwintig heb ik alle cijfers erop geborduurd met een kettingsteek. Dat gaat sneller dan je denkt. Vervolgens heb ik ze alle vijfentwintig aan een lange draad geregen en een lintje aan de uiteinden gezet. C'est tout.

Five down, twenty to go. This count down advent garland was ment for December 1st, but it all went a little different. I bought 25 felt balls overhere at Meervilt and embroidered them with numbers one to twenty-five 

Bovenop de piano een zeefdruk van Sinterklaas, die nog een wel een beetje hulp mijnerzijds kan gebruiken. We hopen dat hij ons vanavond een heerlijk avondje bezorgt! Alle drie de kinderen zijn het er roerend over eens dat Sinterklaasavond de beste avond van het jaar is.

On top of our old piano a silkscreen print of Sinterklaas. Let's hope it's going to be a delightful evening tonight! Our children all agreed it's the best night of the year.

Origami christmas wreaths

Kleine papieren kerstkransjes, wie wil die nou niet in de boom? Klik hier om te zien hoe je ze maakt, van origami papier, bruin inpakpapier of een ordinair A4-tje. Valentijn nam ze mee naar school en stak daar zijn klasgenoten aan. En thuis maakten wij er een heleboel om in de boom te hangen. Ook al benieuwd hoe mooi die boom gaat worden? Aan het eind van de rit laten we het resultaat natuurlijk zien!

You can make this little christmas wreaths out of origami paper, but kraft paper or ordinary office stationary will do fine too. We made a whole bunch of them, waiting to be put in the tree. Wanna make them too, click here for a tutorial.

Lucky Star Garland

Een knoopje in een strook papier leggen. Dat is alles. Lucky Stars zijn zo makkelijk en zo mooi. Voor de slinger kun je ze meteen meeknopen met het touwtje waaraan je zo ophangt. Dat gaat makkelijker dan achteraf met een naald er doorheen prikken. Hier kun je zien hoe je verder moet vanaf het knoopje. We maakten ook een heleboel losse. Leuk om de tafel mee te versieren tijdens het kerstdiner!

Lucky Stars, there's nothing more to it than tying a knot in piece of paper. To make a garland, you put the rope right in the knot, that's easier than picking through with a needle afterwards. Look for a tutorial at Folding Trees. We made more lucky stars to decorate the christmas table. 

Yarn Star

Deze liet ik vorig jaar ook al zien, maar in het kader van de christmas craft challenge, is 'ie hier nog een keer. De yarn star, oftewel de ster van garen. Gewoon karton, katoen en spelden. Zo makkelijk, zo mooi. Vorig jaar maakten wij er een heleboel en de kinderen leerden het hun klasgenoten. Bij haar vond ik de tutorial, hier laat ik de lijmloze versie zien.

Origami easter bunny and free printable

Still in the origami mood, and it is contagious. Last week our school held an auction for Japan and our eldest son teached his class to fold cranes. They've been folding like mad men. Every who contributed got one. I've made these bunnies and put them in a cardholder.  I also hung a few in a willow branch. "What are these kangaroos doing in the easter tree...?". I used this tutorial.

I also made a free printable out of it. Since I have so many Swedish readers everyday, I've made a Swedish Easter card for them. By clicking on the picture, you can copy/paste it. If you print it on heavy weight paper it's a nice Easter card.Thank you all for stopping by. Feel free to say hello!

Little boxes

Maybe you didn't like the origami geishas as much as I did, but I stay a little longer in Japan, if you don't mind. Let's make little origami boxes. I've made a whole bunch of them as a project for the school of our children. Once in a while I help crafting at school, and although I'm very content with this school, I don't think very highly of their arts and crafts educationprogram! I don't know how things work in other schools, but once I open my big mouth, I usely end up with a lot of work...

So little boxes it is. (After reading this, check You Tube for the song Little Boxes, and you won't be able to stop humming it, at least that's my experience...) Masu is the name of this little origami box, which is really easy to fold if you follow this diagram. There's no need to buy special paper, anything will do, even magazine paper, cut in squares. It's nice to make something with the children to put in the box. I've made these little frogs. They can jump for real! The diagram was in the box where the daisy paper came from (Djeco), but I found it  here too. Six year olds can do this.

And how about a bear in a box? You should be a little over six to manage this ;-).

DWZI/This week I saw...

Crafting genes must be strong ones! My mother was and is always crafting, mostly quilting. And although I first had to become thirty and pregnant, I'm an addict too. Drawing used to be my big love, but when I got pregnant I made babysheets and blankets. Now I need to make something every once and a while. Our sons like drawing and painting too, but aren't so keen on the fiber department. Lauren on the other hand loves yarn and fabric. She spoolknitted a long thread and now she wants to make a bag for her doll from it.  Looks good so far!

She is a busy little lady anyway. While I'm longing for spring, watching the little snowdrops grow in our yard, she wrote a story about two kids who want to make a snowman. "Let's ask my mother for a carrot", "She needs the carrot for diner",  that's about me, I guess. Luckily the boy's mother is more flexibel. "Yes, now we can start to make our snowman". It was so nice to see how determined she was to type the words down herself!

christmas yarn star

 Bye bye Sinterklaas, bye bye winter, for now. We had so much fun saturday, but now it's wet and messy all over. Since I'm red-nosed myself the last few days, I can just as well show you the christmas star I made. These stars are really easy to make, following this tutorial. You can do it with your children, following this tutorial. Getting the pins in is the hardest part. From that point you're only five minutes away from a selfmade ornament. Minimum effort, maximum result!

Last minute crafting for Sinterklaas

Just a few days till 'pakjesavond', the night Zwarte Piet might drop off a big bag of presents. In the meantime our sons are having other concerns. Valentijn is measuring the thickness of the ice (in a forgotten vase)  in order to be prepared when it comes to skating. The Friesian genes are strong ones, apparently. When the temperature outside gets below zero (Celsius), we're getting  feverish! We all love to skate. It's such a typical Dutch thing to do (social historian again...), that I have no words in English to describe this ice fever. As much as I love blogging, if the frost is here to stay, there's just one thing for me: the 'schaatsforum', to check the spots for reliable ice to skate on.

For all of you who might be less dedicated to all the goodness winter is bringing us, I show you some -very bad- pictures of the paperdoll we made last week, Valentijn did the purple and green one. I used old magazines for the pink one. The sleeves and trousers are in fact buildings. We totally forgot to add feathers on the hat, so we let  Picnik do it for us. We used this template and laminated it afterwards. We'll always have Paris, to show you how it works.
