An apple a day

Natuurlijk moet er voor de Christmas Craft Challenge ook genaaid worden. Ik maakte kleine rode appeltjes van fluweel. (Zeiden ze nou echt "God didn't make little green apples" in dat liedje? Raar..) Je kan eventueel het uiteinde van een veter gebruiken als steeltje. Mijn moeder deed dat in de grote appel waar Valentijn zo verlekkerd naar kijkt. Maar aangezien ik de appeltjes in de boom hang, heb ik gewoon een ophanglusje met bruin borduurgaren gemaakt en een klein stukje aan het knoopje laten zitten. Klik hier voor het patroontje.

En nu ben ik er eigenlijk wel een beetje klaar mee. Onze boom is vol. De origami hartjes krijgt u er nog bij en dan is het mooi geweest.

Let's do some sewing this time. I made little apples out of velvet. (And could help thinking of that song: "God didn't make little green apples".) You can consider to insert the end of a shoelace if you want a little stalk, but since we hang them in the tree, I didn't bother. My mother did so in the apple Valentijn's pretending to eat. Waldorf Angel

Vorig jaar vertelde ik al hoe de Vrije School tradities langzaam hun intrede doen in mijn volwassen-met-kinderen leven, nadat ik er mij een jeugd lang tegen heb verzet. Ik had nooit gedacht dat ik nog eens op zoek zou gaan naar een tutorial voor deze engeltjes van wol. En dat ik teleurgesteld zou zijn, omdat ik geen goede kon vinden. Dus raar maar waar; ik heb er zelf een gemaakt. Het is trouwens helemaal niet moeilijk en er zijn bovendien veel mooiere voorbeelden dan de mijne. Klik hier voor de beschrijving.

Last year I told you how Waldorf traditions slowly but surely found their way in my adult life after a childhood filled with pulling away from them. A few years ago I would never had thought I would search for a tutorial for these waldorf angels of wool and be dissappointed by not finding it. So I whipped it up myself. Another paper star

Het heerlijk avondje is weer voorbij. Voorbij, voorbij en o, voorgoed voorbij. Nou ja, tot volgend jaar, dan. Tijd om eens helemaal in de Christmas Craft Challenge te duiken. Nou ja met zes kerstdecoraties vind ik dat we het tot dusver al heel aardig gedaan hebben.

Ongeveer een maand geleden zag ik een jongetje op school met deze ster rondlopen. Ik kende hem niet goed, maar die origami-achtige ster lonkte dusdanig dat  ik hem vroeg hoe hij dat gemaakt had. Het is een beetje een wiskundige puzzel...Hallo, hallo, bent u daar nog? Je ziet het pas als je het doorhebt, om met Johan Cruijff te spreken, maar echt moeilijk is het niet. About a month ago I saw a boy at school running around with a star like this. I was not very familiar with the kid but I couldn't resist this origami looking ornament he was carrying around. So I asked him to explain to me how to make this. Frankly, I didn't understand it at first. It's like a math puzzle. Are you still with me....? Just try, it isn't that hard. It's modular origami. Felt advent garland

Nog 20 dagen te gaan voor het kerst is. Eigenlijk had ik deze aftelslinger voor 1 december bedacht, maar ja 'life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans'. Voor vandaag dan maar. Meervilt is een fijne (web)winkel met prachtig vilt, waar ik 25 vilten balletjes kocht. Van een tot vijfentwintig heb ik alle cijfers erop geborduurd met een kettingsteek. Dat gaat sneller dan je denkt. Vervolgens heb ik ze alle vijfentwintig aan een lange draad geregen en een lintje aan de uiteinden gezet. C'est tout.

Five down, twenty to go. This count down advent garland was ment for December 1st, but it all went a little different. I bought 25 felt balls overhere at Meervilt and embroidered them with numbers one to twenty-five 

Bovenop de piano een zeefdruk van Sinterklaas, die nog een wel een beetje hulp mijnerzijds kan gebruiken. We hopen dat hij ons vanavond een heerlijk avondje bezorgt! Alle drie de kinderen zijn het er roerend over eens dat Sinterklaasavond de beste avond van het jaar is.

On top of our old piano a silkscreen print of Sinterklaas. Let's hope it's going to be a delightful evening tonight! Our children all agreed it's the best night of the year.

Origami christmas wreaths

Kleine papieren kerstkransjes, wie wil die nou niet in de boom? Klik hier om te zien hoe je ze maakt, van origami papier, bruin inpakpapier of een ordinair A4-tje. Valentijn nam ze mee naar school en stak daar zijn klasgenoten aan. En thuis maakten wij er een heleboel om in de boom te hangen. Ook al benieuwd hoe mooi die boom gaat worden? Aan het eind van de rit laten we het resultaat natuurlijk zien!

You can make this little christmas wreaths out of origami paper, but kraft paper or ordinary office stationary will do fine too. We made a whole bunch of them, waiting to be put in the tree. Wanna make them too, click here for a tutorial.

Lucky Star Garland

Een knoopje in een strook papier leggen. Dat is alles. Lucky Stars zijn zo makkelijk en zo mooi. Voor de slinger kun je ze meteen meeknopen met het touwtje waaraan je zo ophangt. Dat gaat makkelijker dan achteraf met een naald er doorheen prikken. Hier kun je zien hoe je verder moet vanaf het knoopje. We maakten ook een heleboel losse. Leuk om de tafel mee te versieren tijdens het kerstdiner!

Lucky Stars, there's nothing more to it than tying a knot in piece of paper. To make a garland, you put the rope right in the knot, that's easier than picking through with a needle afterwards. Look for a tutorial at Folding Trees. We made more lucky stars to decorate the christmas table. 

Yarn Star

Deze liet ik vorig jaar ook al zien, maar in het kader van de christmas craft challenge, is 'ie hier nog een keer. De yarn star, oftewel de ster van garen. Gewoon karton, katoen en spelden. Zo makkelijk, zo mooi. Vorig jaar maakten wij er een heleboel en de kinderen leerden het hun klasgenoten. Bij haar vond ik de tutorial, hier laat ik de lijmloze versie zien.

Christmas Craft Challenge

Zonder aankondiging hier waren er al een heleboel van jullie die hun nieuwsgierigheid niet konden bedwingen. De 'christmas craft challenge', want dat allitereert zo lekker. Het idee was om vanaf 6 december, want ná Sinterklaas, elke dag een zelfgemaakte kerstversiering te plaatsen.

Wij hebben namelijk altijd twee kerstbomen. Een voor mijn almaar groeiende verzameling kerstversiering, die al bijna mythische vormen begint aan te nemen. Niet vanwege de omvang, maar omdat ik op vakantie altijd op zoek ben naar kerstversiering. Dat is in augustus nog wel eens lastig. Als er dan geklaagd wordt dat er wel belangrijker dingen in augustus in Italië te doen zijn dan zoeken naar kerstspeld in een zomerhooiberg, heb ik mijn antwoord klaar. Zo klaar, dat iedereen het nu wel weet. "Ja Mam, als jij er niet meer bent, zullen we kwijlen van herinnering boven de doos met kerstspullen".

Goed, dat is dus die ene boom. Die andere boom mag vol felgekleurde kerstparafernalia. Nu was het dit jaar het plan om díe boom alleen met zelfgemaakte kerstversiering op te tuigen. Goed plan. De christmas craft challenge was geboren.

Nu krijg ik mailtjes van hen wier handen blijkbaar jeuken en die niet tot na de Sinterklaas kunnen wachten. En ze hebben ook wel gelijk. Als je iets voor de kerst wilt maken, moet je niet zo lang meer wachten. Niemand maakt nog ballen op 24 december, tenslotte. Dus, beste lezers, ik ben om. We gaan van start. Ik denk niet dat ik alle dagen tot aan de Kerst vol maak, maar we zullen zien hoe ver we komen.

From tomorrow on: the Christmas Craft Challenge. Various e-mails convinced me to start earlier, so we all have more time to finish our Christmas preparations.  I try to present a handmade decoration almost every day. I probably won't last till december 25, but let's see how far we get. I have three helpers around the house and they are very eager! 


The idea was born when we decided to make our second christmas tree an all handmade one. No more ugly christmas parafernalia anymore. 

St. Lucia

I love traditions, even if they're not my own. Today it's st. Lucia's day. In Sweden, the youngest daughter, dressed in white gown with a red sash is the Lussibrud (Lucia bride). She wears a crown with candles on her head and serves saffranrolls to the rest of the family. I can't help wondering how this was done when they hadn't electric candles. A lot of beautiful long blond hair must have gone up in smoke, I guess. We didn't send Lauren to school in a white dress today, nor gave her any saffranrolls to treat. Two tangerines is all she's got, festive enough for a tradition which  isn't ours. What are your traditions in the period of advent, I love to hear...

Waldorf traditions after all

When I was growing up my parents were very involved in establishing a Waldorf school in the place were we lived and everything that came with it. Once I became a teenager I got very annoyed by everything concerning antroposophy. I didn't want to have anything to do with it. To me antroposophy was associated with stale sourdough bread, men in handspun sweaters, women in dyed skirts (we're talking the seventies) and damp cloths as a medicine for almost every illness, all covered with the heavy smell of arnica,which I still can't stand. My parents weren't like that at all, I must add. And then I became a mother.  A lot of routines and traditions from the Waldorf school seemed pretty nice to me, actually...So today, Joseph and Mary, very waldorfy indeed, are making a long yourney trough our livingroom before they arrive at the manger. They are made out of woolfelt and silk. I've whipped them up myself, but you can buy kits like this overhere. The cardboard christmas tree is our adventcalendar from the Wiener Werkstätte. The blue picture is a cyanotype which I bought from etsy, waiting patiently to be framed. And to complete this tour: the rowing man is my husband, on a drawing I made him when he got forty.

First advent

And in the middle of all excitement which Sinterklaas arouses, it's suddenly the first sunday of advent. And what a great day it was. We are living near the dunes, and we did some deerspotting today. We saw stags with huge antlers and a lot of other deer. I don't want to walk around with this huge and heavy camera all the time, so the pictures are taken with my phone. Despite the poor quality I love the silhouette of my three musketeers!

After the long walk and a rewarding pancake afterwards, we were invited to a birthdayparty. I made two more pillows for the two brothers, a soccer player and a baseball player. Again this turned out to be the perfect gift...

Though we'll wait until the 6th of december to open the first doors on the adventcalendar, we do lit one candle on advent's wreath. We decorated it with a blue ribbon, which is actually the colour that belongs to this period. Usually my father makes them, but because it's the second advent before we see one another again I did it myself this year.

I felt like a real editor, changing my blog's lay-out for Christmas. If it wasn't the biggest cliche of all times, I'd say it's the most wonderful time of the year. December 6th I grab my Frank Sinatra Christmas album, and off we go. Time for "Kerst met Linus" (a Swedish televion series), The Polar Express, playing christmas carrols on our terrible out of tone piano, the whole shebang. I love it. More is more. But decorationswise I like to keep it simple. White, green and a little red, it's christmas after all.
